Diagnosis

Diagnosis involves laboratory and imaging studies to pinpoint the cause of calcium imbalance:

  • Serum calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels
  • Vitamin D and phosphate testing
  • 24-hour urine calcium to assess kidney stone risk
  • Parathyroid imaging (ultrasound or sestamibi scan) when surgery is being considered

Treatment & Ongoing Management

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and severity of the condition:

  • Hyperparathyroidism: Parathyroid surgery for symptomatic or severe cases; regular monitoring for mild disease.
  • Hypocalcemia or vitamin D deficiency: Calcium and vitamin D supplementation, along with treatment of the underlying cause.
  • Kidney stone prevention: Adequate hydration, dietary adjustments, and routine follow-up to prevent recurrence.
