Musculoskeletal imaging supports the diagnosis of acute injuries, chronic joint problems, arthritis, and tendon or ligament disorders. At The Medical Group of New Jersey, our radiologists use X-ray, MRI, CT, and ultrasound to help orthopedic specialists design targeted treatment plans.
Symptom Onset & Initial Evaluation
Patients often seek care for joint or bone concerns, such as:
- Sudden injury from a fall or sports activity
- Persistent joint pain or stiffness
- Swelling or limited mobility
- Clicking, locking, or instability
- Pain that does not improve with rest
During your first visit, your provider will review your activity level, recent trauma, medical history, and symptom pattern. This helps determine whether initial imaging should begin with an X-ray or advanced MRI.
Diagnosis
Imaging is key to evaluating both bone and soft-tissue structures. Common studies include:
- X-ray: First-line imaging for fractures, arthritis, and alignment
- MRI: Best for ligaments, tendons, cartilage, meniscus tears, muscle injuries, and stress fractures
- CT: Helpful for complex fractures or surgical planning
- Ultrasound: Evaluates tendons, cysts, fluid collections, or guided injections
These modalities help distinguish between conditions requiring conservative management and those needing orthopedic intervention.
Treatment Guidance & Management
Imaging results help determine the best treatment, including:
- Physical therapy for soft-tissue injury or overuse
- Bracing or immobilization for fractures or instability
- Pain management or anti-inflammatory therapy
- Referral for orthopedic surgery when needed
- Image-guided injections for pain relief or joint evaluation
Radiology plays a central role in confirming the diagnosis and guiding minimally invasive procedures.
Ongoing Management & Monitoring
Follow-up imaging may be ordered to:
- Ensure fractures are healing properly
- Monitor chronic arthritis or degenerative disease
- Evaluate postoperative hardware
- Assess persistent or recurring pain
