Top Conditions We Treat

At The Medical Group of New Jersey, our hepatologists diagnose and manage a wide range of liver and biliary conditions. Explore the most common below; each is linked to its detailed Clinical Patient Journey, covering symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management.

Hepatitis
Inflammation of the liver caused by viruses (A–E), autoimmune reactions, or medications. We offer complete diagnostic testing, antiviral therapy, and immune-modulating treatments.

Cirrhosis
Chronic liver scarring that leads to portal hypertension, ascites, and encephalopathy. Our hepatologists provide medical management, endoscopic care, and transplant evaluation when needed.

Liver Cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma)
Primary liver cancer that often develops in cirrhosis. We offer early detection with imaging and AFP testing, plus treatments such as ablation, embolization, and surgery.

Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD/NASH)
Fat buildup in the liver related to obesity or diabetes. We provide lifestyle counseling, medical therapy, and monitoring to prevent progression to cirrhosis.

Portal Hypertension
Increased pressure in the portal vein can lead to varices and ascites. Our specialists manage this condition with beta-blockers, banding, or TIPS procedures to prevent bleeding.

Ascites
Fluid buildup from cirrhosis causes swelling and discomfort. We perform diagnostic paracentesis, prescribe diuretics, and coordinate nutrition and infection prevention.

Variceal Bleeding
Bleeding from enlarged veins in the esophagus or stomach due to portal hypertension. We provide emergency endoscopy, banding, and secondary prevention strategies.

Hemochromatosis
Genetic or secondary iron overload that damages the liver, heart, and pancreas. We diagnose through genetic testing and manage with phlebotomy or chelation therapy.

Wilson’s Disease
Inherited copper metabolism disorder affecting the liver and brain. We offer chelation therapy, monitoring, and coordination with neurology for neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Transplant Complications
Post-transplant complications such as rejection or biliary strictures require expert follow-up. We coordinate labs, imaging, and immunosuppressive management for long-term success.

Our Multidisciplinary Approach

Because liver health affects and is affected by multiple organ systems, our hepatologists work closely with specialists in gastroenterology (for endoscopic management), oncology (for liver cancer), interventional radiology (for TIPS and tumor ablation), nutrition (for metabolic support), and transplant surgery (for pre- and post-transplant care). This integrated care model ensures we treat the whole patient, not just the liver.
