Back & Joint Pain

Back and joint pain are among the most common reasons people seek medical care. Pain may develop from muscle strain, arthritis, overuse injuries, or age-related wear and tear. While symptoms often improve with conservative care, early evaluation helps identify underlying causes and prevent long-term discomfort.

At The Medical Group of New Jersey, our family medicine team provides thorough assessment, personalized treatment plans, and coordinated referrals to physical therapy or orthopedics when needed.

Symptom Onset & Initial Evaluation

Symptoms may appear suddenly after an activity or develop gradually over time. Common signs include:

  • Aching, stiffness, or soreness in the back, knees, shoulders, or hips
  • Reduced mobility or difficulty with daily activities
  • Pain that worsens with movement or prolonged sitting
  • Muscle spasms
  • Swelling or tenderness around the affected joint

During your visit, your provider will review your symptoms, recent activities, work habits, exercise routines, and any history of injury or arthritis. A focused physical exam helps determine which muscles, joints, or nerves are involved.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based on clinical findings, but further testing may be needed if symptoms are severe or persistent:

  • X-rays: To look for arthritis or spine alignment changes
  • MRI: To evaluate discs, ligaments, or soft tissue injuries
  • Blood tests: When inflammatory arthritis is suspected
  • Nerve testing: For symptoms suggesting sciatica or nerve compression

Testing is performed or coordinated on-site for efficient evaluation.

Treatment

Treatment focuses on relieving pain, restoring function, and preventing future flare-ups.

Lifestyle & Home Care

  • Heat or ice for pain relief
  • Gentle stretching and mobility exercises
  • Activity modification to reduce strain
  • Posture education and ergonomic adjustments
  • Non-prescription anti-inflammatory medications (when appropriate)

Medical Management

Depending on the cause, treatment may include:

  • Prescription-strength anti-inflammatory medications
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Topical pain relievers
  • Joint injections (such as corticosteroids) for arthritis or inflammation

Rehabilitation & Specialty Care

  • Physical therapy to improve strength and mobility
  • Referral to orthopedics, pain management, or rheumatology for complex cases

Treatment plans are individualized based on your symptoms, imaging results, and lifestyle goals.

Ongoing Management & Long-Term Care

For many people, back and joint pain are recurring issues. Long-term management may involve:

  • Home exercise routines to reduce flare-ups
  • Maintaining a healthy weight to reduce joint strain
  • Regular physical activity and core strengthening
  • Periodic follow-up to reassess pain levels and treatment effectiveness

Our family medicine team partners with you to help maintain mobility, reduce pain, and improve quality of life.
