Breast Imaging

Breast imaging focuses on early detection, precise diagnosis, and accurate follow-up of breast conditions, including cancer. At The Medical Group of New Jersey, we offer screening mammography, diagnostic mammography, tomosynthesis (3-D mammography), targeted ultrasound, and MRI for high-risk patients.

Symptom Onset & Initial Evaluation

Breast imaging may be performed as part of routine screening or because of symptoms such as:

  • A palpable lump
  • Breast pain or discomfort
  • Nipple discharge
  • Skin changes such as dimpling or redness
  • Swelling or asymmetry

Your provider will review your personal and family history, prior imaging, and any new symptoms. This helps determine the most appropriate imaging pathway.

Diagnosis

Breast imaging typically follows a stepwise approach:

  • Screening mammography: Detects abnormalities before symptoms appear
  • Diagnostic mammography: Provides targeted views for areas of concern
  • Ultrasound: Evaluates cysts, solid masses, or areas not well seen on mammography
  • Breast MRI: Used for high-risk patients or complex diagnostic cases

If an abnormality requires evaluation, the next step may involve image-guided biopsy, performed under ultrasound, stereotactic, or MRI guidance.

Treatment Guidance & Management

Imaging results help clinicians:

  • Determine whether a finding is benign or suspicious
  • Plan biopsies or surgical approaches
  • Coordinate oncology referral if needed
  • Assess the extent of known breast cancer before treatment
  • Monitor response to chemotherapy or radiation

Radiologists work closely with breast surgeons, oncologists, and primary care physicians to ensure fast, accurate communication.

Ongoing Management & Monitoring

Follow-up imaging is often recommended to ensure stability or resolution, such as:

  • Short-interval follow-up imaging for low-risk findings
  • Annual or semiannual screening for high-risk patients
  • Monitoring of benign lesions
  • Surveillance after breast cancer treatment

These strategies help detect changes early and support long-term breast health.
