Phyllodes Tumor

Phyllodes tumors are rare breast tumors that can be benign, borderline, or malignant. They may grow quickly and can look similar to fibroadenomas on imaging. Because they can recur if not fully removed, surgical excision with clear margins is often recommended.

At The Medical Group of New Jersey, we provide timely evaluation and surgical planning to ensure accurate diagnosis and definitive treatment.

Symptom Onset & Initial Evaluation

Phyllodes tumors may present as:

  • A firm breast lump that enlarges over weeks to months
  • Visible breast asymmetry or stretching of the skin (with larger tumors)
  • A mass found on imaging

Your surgeon will review the growth pattern and imaging features and discuss biopsy findings if already performed.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis may include:

  • Diagnostic ultrasound and/or mammography
  • Core needle biopsy, though results may sometimes be indeterminate
  • Pathology review to determine tumor type and margin needs

Treatment & Ongoing Management

Treatment usually includes:

  • Surgical excision with a margin of normal tissue to reduce recurrence risk
  • Additional treatment plans depend on pathology (benign vs. malignant features) and may include closer surveillance

Follow-Up Care

Follow-up focuses on monitoring for local recurrence with exams and imaging at recommended intervals.
