Sjögren’s Syndrome

Sjögren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the glands that produce tears and saliva. This causes persistent dryness of the eyes and mouth and, in some cases, inflammation affecting the joints, lungs, nerves, or other organs.

At The Medical Group of New Jersey, our rheumatology specialists provide comprehensive evaluation and coordinated care to manage both glandular and systemic symptoms.

Symptom Onset & Initial Evaluation

Symptoms often develop gradually and may include:

  • Gritty, burning, or persistently dry eyes
  • Dry mouth, difficulty swallowing dry foods, or frequent dental decay
  • Fatigue and joint pain
  • Swelling of the salivary glands

Early diagnosis is essential to prevent complications that affect vision, oral health, and quality of life.

Diagnosis

Evaluation at The Medical Group of New Jersey includes advanced laboratory and imaging studies to confirm gland involvement and identify systemic disease:

  • Blood tests: SSA/Ro and SSB/La antibodies
  • Schirmer’s test: Measures tear production
  • Salivary gland studies or biopsy: Evaluates gland inflammation and function
  • Imaging or additional labs: Performed when systemic (whole-body) involvement is suspected.

Treatment & Ongoing Management

Management focuses on relieving dryness, protecting oral and eye health, and controlling inflammation:

  • Artificial tears, lubricating eye ointments, or punctal plugs
  • Saliva stimulants, sugar-free lozenges, or saliva substitutes
  • Consistent dental care and topical fluoride treatments
  • Immunosuppressive or biologic therapy for systemic symptoms

Our multidisciplinary team at The Medical Group of New Jersey works closely with ophthalmology and dentistry specialists to provide coordinated, whole-person care.

Follow-Up & Outlook

Regular follow-up helps prevent dental and ocular complications and allows early detection of systemic involvement. With proper management, most patients maintain good quality of life and stable long-term outcomes.
