Thyroid Disorders

Thyroid disorders are among the most common endocrine conditions, affecting metabolism, mood, weight, and energy levels. Disorders include hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), thyroid nodules, and thyroid cancer.

At The Medical Group of New Jersey, our endocrinologists provide comprehensive testing, ultrasound-guided evaluation, and individualized treatment to restore healthy thyroid function and long-term balance.

Symptom Onset & Initial Evaluation

Thyroid disorders often develop slowly, and their symptoms can easily be mistaken for other health issues. Because thyroid hormones regulate energy, metabolism, and body temperature, even slight imbalances can affect how you feel day to day.

  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) can cause fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, constipation, and sensitivity to cold.
  • Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) may lead to unexplained weight loss, rapid heartbeat, tremors, anxiety, or heat intolerance.

During your evaluation, your endocrinologist will review your symptoms, medical history, medications, and family background. A careful neck examination may also be performed to check for thyroid enlargement or nodules.

Diagnosis

Accurate diagnosis is key to identifying the root cause of thyroid imbalance and guiding effective treatment. Your endocrinologist may order:

  • TSH and free T4/T3 levels are used to measure thyroid hormone production and activity.
  • Antibody testing (TPO, TRAb) to detect autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or Graves’ disease.
  • Thyroid ultrasound to evaluate the gland’s structure, identify nodules, and detect inflammation.
  • Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) to test any suspicious nodules for cancer cells.
  • If hyperthyroidism is suspected, a radioiodine uptake scan may be used to assess gland function and determine whether the entire thyroid or specific nodules are overactive.

Treatment & Ongoing Management

Treatment depends on the type and cause of thyroid disorder. Your endocrinologist will create a personalized plan designed to restore normal hormone balance and prevent complications.

  • Hypothyroidism: Managed with levothyroxine (thyroid hormone replacement) and regular TSH monitoring to keep hormone levels within range.
  • Hyperthyroidism: Treated with antithyroid medications, radioiodine therapy, or thyroid surgery when necessary.
  • Thyroid Nodules & Cancer: Depending on biopsy results, options may include active surveillance, surgical removal, or thyroid hormone suppression therapy to prevent recurrence.

Follow-Up & Long-Term Care

Most thyroid conditions are well controlled with proper treatment and follow-up. Your endocrinologist at The Medical Group of New Jersey will monitor thyroid hormone levels, adjust medications as needed, and perform periodic imaging to ensure ongoing stability.

With consistent care, most patients regain normal energy, metabolism, and quality of life and remain symptom-free for years to come.
