Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive treatment option for women with symptomatic uterine fibroids who wish to avoid surgery. Instead of removing fibroids surgically, UFE works by reducing their blood supply, causing them to shrink over time.

The Medical Group of New Jersey offers UFE as a uterus-preserving option with shorter recovery than traditional surgery.

Symptom Onset & Initial Evaluation

Fibroids may cause symptoms that significantly impact quality of life. Common reasons for referral include:

  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Pelvic pressure or pain
  • Abdominal bloating or fullness
  • Fatigue related to anemia

At The Medical Group of New Jersey, your provider reviews the severity of your symptoms, prior treatments, and reproductive goals to determine candidacy for UFE.

Diagnosis

Imaging is essential for treatment planning and typically includes:

  • Pelvic ultrasound to identify fibroids
  • Pelvic MRI to assess fibroid size, number, and location
  • Blood tests when anemia is suspected

Treatment Guidance & Management

Most patients are treated on an outpatient basis or with an overnight hospital stay. During the UFE procedure:

  • A catheter is guided into the uterine arteries
  • Embolic particles block blood flow to fibroids
  • Fibroids shrink gradually over weeks to months

UFE often provides significant improvement in symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure, helping many patients feel better and regain daily comfort.1

Ongoing Management & Monitoring

Recovery focuses on symptom improvement and imaging follow-up, including:

  • Tracking changes in bleeding and pain
  • Follow-up ultrasound or MRI
  • Coordination with OB-GYN for long-term care
